Overheard

So I just came across what I think is my new favorite blog.  Overheard in Minneapolis.  It’s a huge listing of little clips of conversations that people have overheard, in Minneapolis.  I love it.  All the amusing parts of taking the bus, without actually having to get on the bus.  There are also ones for other cities here, in case you live elsewhere and prefer more localized comedy.  The quotes alone are great, and most are made even better by both the title and the name of the person who logged them.

Favorites so far (only read back through about a week’s worth):

Better listeners, Shouldn’t raise fares, Wish, Crazy talk, Handful, Editor, Waterfall, Dumb Game, Totally Block E, Threesome, Proof not all cops are bad, High.

Totally going in my rss reader.

Wow, that last line sounds so dorky even I want to make fun of me.

That makes me feel safe and proud to pay taxes

“Sonia Pitt, the MnDOT emergency response executive fired for taking an unauthorized, state-paid trip to Washington during the Interstate 35W bridge disaster, is now working for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.” – StarTrib

Oh, and after being fired for “activities that cannot withstand public scrutiny without embarrassment” at the State level, not only was she hired by the Federal government, she now make eight-nine thousand freaking dollars.

Your tax dollars at work.

Requiem For A Day Off

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, put to the music from Requiem For A Dream.  A good example of how important editing and sound track are to the meaning of what you see.  Probably not a bad parallel to your average movie trailer, or the evening news for that matter (think of CNN’s ultra tense back from commercial/going to commercial music for example).

As a side note, if you haven’t seen Requiem For A Dream, see it, but be prepared to be depressed for a couple of days, or maybe a week or two.  It’s a great movie, and extremely well done, but ultra-mega-super depressing. If just the sound track from it can do this to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 4 minutes, imagine what 1 hour and 42 minutes of content that is meant to fit with the sound track can do.

Move Review – The Happening

I’m not one to often read movie reviews, as usually I’m really behind the times, and the review ruins the movie.  In this case, it sounds like the movie did a pretty good job of ruining itself.  This review of “The Happening” is a well done panning, chock full of enough spoilers you’ll never have to waste your time actually watching the movie, and a pretty good example of how dumb both the characters in, and directors of, horror movies generally have to be.  It’s also nice to see someone else pan a movie for being needlessly gore filled, featuring characters with no ability to make logical decisions, and the absolute compulsion to take a broken relationship and make it work during the course of the movie, regardless of the characters/plot/lack-there-of.

As a side note, “The Happening” was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who’s real name is Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan, which is no where near as cool.  Okay, Shyamalan is still a pretty cool name, but the rest I can see why he just made something up instead.  Not that I’m really one to talk.

Nrrrd Grrrl

Mmmmm, dorkiness. Two totally different music video takes on the same nerdcore song.  I love the lyrics, the obscure references, and the appreciation of nerdy girls, or nrrrd grrrls, if you will.  Have I mentioned that my taste in women doesn’t exactly match the Hollywood endorsed standards?  This would be a good example.  I’d say the first is the better of the two, but I can’t resist posting a stop motion Lego video.

Now that’s my kind of professionalism

Well, I finally found a place that I’d love to work.

Think I’d fit in pretty well.  Any guesses on where I would send an application?

Scientist Humor

Headline at New Scientist -> “Great tits enjoying the warmer weather – so far”

Contents of the story as related to the headline -> Proof that most scientists are lonely, lonely men.

If you are a woman, please, go find a scientist, and at least flirt with him, for the good of all mankind.

Hummer salute

FUH2 is a site dedicated to cataloguing pictures of people’s responses to the Hummer H2.  The main page gives a good overview of the reason for the sentiment.  The submissions page, though the pictures aren’t the best quality, is impressive for its shear volume of submissions.

For all the consultants out there

What if there were no stop signs?

What if a major corporation was charged with inventing one?

What if you were the one they brought in to help with it?

It might go a little something like this…

Lolbama – Exactly what it sounds like

Another political one, which is also a bit outdated. What can I say, I’ve been saving links for a while, which lead me to make this blog.

Things Younger Than McCain

I’ve mentioned this one to several people, so it’s time to post it.  A blog dedicated to listing things that are younger than the presumptive Republican nominee for President, John McCain:

http://www.thingsyoungerthanmccain.com/

Some personal favorites: Alaska, Margaritas, Israel, The Golden Gate Bridge, Chocolate Chip Cookies (and one would have to assume then, the Cookie Monster), Mount Rushmore, The Czech Republic, and Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches.

I will say the the blog was more entertaining a couple months ago, when it was solely limited to listing things that are younger than John McCain.  However, I didn’t have a blog to use to link to it then, now did I?

Currently only about every third post are on the topic of things younger than McCain.  The rest are general politics / Republican bashing – which I think takes something from the charm.  It’s now more of an Obama blog with a funny title than one solely dedicated to listing thing younger than McCain (which would probably be more effective).

I was just about to say that I’d like to start another blog called “ThingsOlderThanObama” just to have a fair counter point, and I think it could be even funnier.  I checked the domain name about a month ago and it was free, but it looks like someone else got it and started a blog on July 15th.  Unfortunately, thus far it shows no promising signs of comedy.  If anything it looks even more ragingly partisan and close minded.  Too bad, more flies with honey and all.  Plus, we need something to laugh at in all of this.

Urban Dictionary – Haver

So, in case you haven’t come across UrbanDictionary.com yet, it’s a really handy site for finding out what various slang terms and really localized language mean.  Think something like a Wikipedia for a dictionaries, but with a much heavier focus on items that may not find their way into an *ahem* more dignified/proper dictionary.  If you heard a high school kid / college student say it, and you weren’t sure if you should be offended, this is where to look (though when in doubt, if a high school kid or college says something you don’t understand, you should probably be offended).

People submit definitions for words, and then users can vote them up or down.  It’s also especially handy when the same word has a few different meanings, or if it can be applied in a variety of ways in different contexts.

I was recently reminded of the site when listening to “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers (you know, the song they played at community pools over and over in the late 80’s because it was so repetitious even small, highly chlorinated children could remember the words, scream them, and sound vaguely like the lead singer), and more specifically a cover by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, which makes special point of the song’s use of the obscure word “haver” (the special point they make is noted in the second definition).  I was reminded that, despite the number of times I’ve heard this song, I still had no idea what “haver” means.  So, I checked UrbanDictionary.com, and found this.  Needless to say, the first two are the accepted meaning, but this post/link/explanation is mostly for my amusement at the third definition.

That was a really long set up for such a simple joke.  I’ll work on that in coming posts.
