Kindle DX

Amazon recently announced the release of the Kindle DX, an updated, larger Kindle.  If you’re unfamiliar, the Kindle an e-reader.  Basically a special purpose laptop optimized for reading books – sharp but grey scale screen to make it easier on the eyes, light weight, long battery life.  The original can be found here, and the DX can be found here.  E-book fans have been quite excited about the larger screen of the DX, but a little leary of the high price.  A little bit about it’s release here, here, and more extensively here.  What does a Kindle DX look like you may ask.  I envision something like this:

kindle-dx-1

Or this:

kindle-dx-2

I believe in advertising

Okay, that title’s not true at all.  I don’t like most advertising, because I think most of it, rather than informing you about products you may need, is there to create artificial wants/”needs” and convince you that your life isn’t complete until you acquire some useless product.  It’s there to associate some song or image, or story of how you’d like your life to be with some purchasable item, which really has no particular bearing on your happiness.  More than inform you about things that might make your life better, it makes you feel like you should never be happy with what you already have.  It’s not the newest.  It’s not the best.  It’s not sexy enough.  You’ll die alone and people will laugh at you if you don’t buy our brand of disposable razors instead of the other ones.

</rant (for now)>

So, all that being said, there are some really funny / cool ads out there.  Ones that boarder more towards art / comedy than just pure brainwashing.  Ones that make interesting use of the medium they’re presented on.  For a while now, I’ve been reading a blog called I Believe in Adv (it cuts off there everywhere except in their page titles).  It collects the good ads – some funny, some serious, but all pretty effective.  So (point of the post) here’s some of my favorites:

The perfect disguise

Via Ovablastic

That’s some true commitment to silliness.  I like it.

I also love the feigned seriousness of the reporter and playing along with it.
